Today is the first world food safety day in history. On 20th December 2018 the United Nations General Assembly adopted resolution 73/250 proclaiming a World Food Safety Day. Starting in 2019, every 7th June will be a time to celebrate the myriad benefits of safe food.
Randox Food Diagnostics believes in; “Better science, safer food” on a global scale. Everyone deserves to know where their food comes from and if it is safe to consume, this begins with knowledge sharing and educating each other. Knowing if your food is safe is tricky as for the most part the contaminants are invisible and can include the following;
- Growth promoting hormones
- Drugs of abuse in animals
Unsafe food can take a huge toll on human health and the economy. The World Health Organization estimates that more than 600 million fall ill and 420 000 die every year from eating food contaminated with bacteria, viruses, parasites, toxins or chemicals. As for the economic price tag, according to the World Bank, unsafe food costs low-and middle-income economies alone about US $95 billion in lost productivity annually. Unsafe food also limits trade.
Food producers and traders need to have food safety screening methods in place to ensure the safety of consumers globally. This is why Randox Food Diagnostics developed the revolutionary multiplexing Biochip Array Technology, allowing the screening of up to 54 individual meat/seafood/feed/cereal/wine/honey/dairy samples for multiple drug residues, toxins and other contaminants on the Evidence Investigator analyser in under 2 hours and 30 minutes. This high throughput allows the user to save on time and also to consolidate costs in comparison to confirmatory laboratories.
