Antibiotics are administered to livestock as veterinary drugs to treat or prevent diseases and bacterial infections, whilst also improving growth and production. There is a potential risk to human health if antibiotics are used irresponsibly, as certain antibiotics can cause drug-resistant bacteria to survive in meat leading to illnesses when food is ingested. However, due to more flexitarian diets less antibiotics are in the food chain as globally 42% of consumers have shifted to these plant based diets.
To protect human and animal health, antibiotic use within the agricultural industry is highly regulated with the aim of tackling antibiotic resistance. The use of antibiotics to promote animal growth has been banned since 2006 in the EU and 2017 in the US. More recently in January 2022, this regulation was extended to ban the administration of antibiotics to healthy animals, ensuring that they are only used in essential circumstances in Europe. This is in addition to legislation preventing antibiotics used in human medicine from being added to animal feed.
